The Hunt

A deerskin-clad Crow warrior crept through a mist-shrouded forest, stalking a large buck. As he nocked an arrow, the buck bolted in alarm. The warrior turned to see a boy slumped on a horse, shivering, in shock. Blood flowed from deep gashes in the horse’s throat and withers. Another predator was hunting in these woods.

    Oooooooo, suspense! Wonder what happens?

    • Michael

I’m glad you asked, Phil. There’s actually an entire story based around this. The Crow warrior and his wife raise the boy as their own. When the boy becomes a young man, the Crow village i9s descimated by smallpox. The young man becomes an outlaw and is captured during a botched train robbery. He’s given a pardon in exchange for leading a band of mercenaries into the Montana mountains after a Blackfoot war party. Once in the mountains, they become the hunted when they cross into the territory of a tribe of shapeshifters/werewolves.

Is this story already written, Michael?

        • Michael Coady

It’s based on my screenplay Devil’s Pass, which is under development at Credence Talent. They wanted some backstory to open with and I thought I would show how my protagonist came to be raised by Crow Indians and wound up in jail at a small Montana fort. As soon as I’m finished with the development of my haunted house script, I’ll go back to Devil’s Pass to continue development based on Credence’s notes.

Would be nice to see a conclusion in the 55 word tale, then again I may be asking too much. After all, you have already set the scene, established a character, created suspense and included action…

The conclusion comes when the boy–now a man in his 30s–faces the beast who killed his parents in the Montana Rockies. It’s an epic battle. Think of Arnold in Predator. I’m not talented enough to put all that in 55 words.
